Siena Holds On To Top Wagner 9-8 In MLAX

LOUDONVILLE, NY- Junior Greg Powell (Guilderland, N.Y.) scored the Saints final goal with 8:07 in the fourth quarter to pull away with a 9-8 win over Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opponent Wagner College Saturday afternoon at Siena Field.
Siena (2-7, 1-1) led 9-5 with 7:15 left to play as Wagner opened with three straight goals. Sophomore Mike Coleman scored two goals back to back with one off an assist from Kevin Zulauf and an unassisted goal at the :51 mark to put the Seahawks within two, 9-7. Sophomore Josh Hamilton scored with a man up opportunity to put the Seahawks within one, 9-8 to make it a one-goal game with :12 seconds remaining, but Siena won the ensuing draw control and ran out the clock.
The Seahawks made a run, when sophomore midfielder Kevin McKenny shoved one in pass Siena goalie David Jalette (Orange, Conn.) at the 13:40 marking. Four minutes later, Tom Marchetti layered one in from Michael Sciamanna putting the Saints on the spot with 9:57 left to battle. It was Powell unassisted goal that handed Wagner (1-8, 0-4) the loss and sealed the win for the Saints.
Both teams struggled to create quality-scoring chances in the first two quarters, as Siena held a slim 3-2 lead at the break. At the start of the third quarter, sophomore midfielder Ted Moran (Huntington, NY) opened the quarter as he notched one in from the right wing. The Seahawks responded a minute later when Andre Daly slipped the ball to Michael Sciamanna, 5-3 Siena. From then on it was all Siena as, the Saints set off a barrage of four goals, kicked off by Matt Walsh (Northport, NY) two and Moran's one.
Four Saints scored two goals, as Coleman and Hamilton scored two for the Seahawks. Coleman also had three assists.
In the loss, Wagner's Zulauf fell one goal short to tie the schools all time record in goals. In the cage, Jalette picked up nine saves, while Chris Sochacki had 11.
Saints welcome Stony Brook to the Capital Region on Tuesday, April 12 with a 3:30 p.m. face-off.
