Freshman Mike Maher (Huntington Station, N.Y.) scored two goals and added two assists to pace a balanced offensive attack as the University of Vermont men's lacrosse team defeated Siena, 16-7, Tuesday at Kohn Field.
The Catamounts, 2-4 overall, ran out to a 7-2 lead after the first quarter anmd led 10-3 at the half. Siena, 1-4, scored four straight goals in the final 16 minutes to make a run, but Vermont finished off the game with a pair of fourth-quarter goals from Myles Jewell (Englewood, Colo.) and Lowell Thompson (Shelburne, Vt.) to make for the final margin.
Six players had two goals each for the Cats: Thompson, Jewell, Maher, Doug Moses (Marietta, N.Y.), Bill Wilson (Baltimore, Md.) and RJ Harrison (Columbus, Ohio). Siena was led by Daniel Wolpert, who scored three goals.
Gabel finished with 15 saves in 45 minutes, giving up just four goals, while Matt Geary (Marshfield, Mass.) had three saves in 15 minutes. For Siena, John Bamford had 17 saves.
Siena faces Wagner this Saturday at Union College.
