The Siena College men's lacrosse team captured their first win of the season, defeating Saint Joseph's 9-8 at Union College tonight. With the win the Saints improve to 1-3 overall.
Siena scored the first tally of the game as Chris Padden found the back of the net to put the Saints up 1-0. Peter Green gave Siena a two-point advantage on a goal at the 2:49 mark. St. Joe's finally got on the board in the first with 1:08 remaining. The Hawks tied it up in the second and each team netted two more goals for a 4-4 halftime score.
Siena found the back of the net first in the third to go ahead 5-4, but St. Joe's answered with two straight goals of their own to take a 6-5 lead into the final quarter.
The Saints netted the first two goals of the fourth, courtesy of Dan Wolpert to regain the lead. The Hawks tied it up again at 7-7 and the two teams traded goals before Wolpert made a behind the back pass to Matt Walsh who scored the game-winning goal with 29 seconds remaining.
Wolpert led Siena with three goals and added one assist. Padden and Walsh had two goals each.
Kevin McGrann and Ryan Madairy led the Hawks with two goals apiece.
John Bamford had 18 saves in the cage for Siena while Dan Morrissey made 20 stops for the Hawks.
Siena returns to action on Tuesday March 25 when they travel to Vermont.
