A 5-1 lead by St. Joseph's in the first quarter proved too much for Siena as the Saints fell to the Hawks 15-8 in their season and MAAC opener at Franklin Field in Philadelphia, Pa. Thursday afternoon. The Saints are now out to an 0-1 start on the season and in MAAC play, while the Hawks improved to 2-5 overall and 1-1 in the league.
Senior Matt Mueller (Franklin Lakes, N.J. / Ramapo) kicked things off three minutes into the game with his first of four goals on the day. After Siena's Matthew Walsh found the back of the net, the Crimson and Gray scored four straight to take a 5-1 lead with 2:52 remaining in the first quarter. Mueller started the 4-0 run with his second tally and was followed by seniors Mike Pagliaro (Madison, Conn. / Daniel Hand), Mike Elger (Annapolis, Md. / St. Mary's), and redshirt freshman Alex McColough (Chevy Chase, Md. / St. Andrew's).
The Saints broke the spurt with an Eric Hungershafer goal late in the first quarter, but SJU responded with a man-up goal from junior Andrew Four (Springfield, Pa. / Cardinal O'Hara) and another tally from Mueller. Siena drew within 7-4 after scoring two goals in nine seconds in the second quarter, but would get no closer as the Hawks scored eight of the next 12 goals to finish with a 15-8 victory.
A trio of Hawks tallied three or more goals, led by sophomore Keegan Wilkinson (Columbia, Md. / DeMatha Catholic) (four goals, two assists). Senior Brian Mullan (Maplewood, N.J. / Columbia) dished a team-high four assists. Sophomore Travis McDonnell (Aberdeen, Md. / DeMatha Catholic) stopped 11 shots for the win.
Walsh recorded a hat-trick to pace the Saints, while John Bamford stopped eight shots to absorb the loss. SJU held a 41-36 advantage in shots and a 43-30 lead in groundballs.
The Saints will travel to Emmitsburg, MD on Saturday for a match-up with Mount St. Mary's. Game-time is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
