Saints Drop Another Tight One
March 5, 2013
Brody Eastwood scored five goals as defending America East Champion Stony Brook handed Siena Lacrosse its second straight close defeat 11-9. Red-shirt sophomore Richie Hurley posted his first career hat trick for the Saints which have dropped their last two games by a total of three goals.
Conor Prunty gave Siena (1-4) its first and only lead just 39 seconds in. But Stony Brook (4-2) tied the game at the 8:11 mark of the first period and led the rest of the way although never by more than three goals in a tightly contested affair.
The Seawolves led 6-5 at the half before Hurley tied the game one final time at 6-6 in the third. Hurley pulled the Saints to within a goal, 8-7 heading to the fourth, but Stony Brook scored three of the next four goals to create enough breathing room.
Nate Barry added four points for the Saints on two goals and two assists and Prunty contributed two goals and an assist for Siena which was out-shot 38-29.
Casey Dowd was dominant in the faceoff X winning 18-24 draws and picking up seven groundballs, while Matt Sharp made seven saves for the Saints which have dropped eight of nine all-time meetings against Stony Brook.
The Seawolves, which entered the day receiving votes in the Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media Poll following back-to-back wins over Big East foes Rutgers and St. John's, received three points apiece from a quartet of players.
The Saints return home Saturday to host Hartford at 1 p.m. at Siena Turf Field. The game will be televised regionally on Time Warner Cable SportsChannel.
