The Siena college men's lacrosse team fell to the University of Denver 23-3 in a Monday night match-up at Pioneer Field. Paving the way for Denver's offensive frenzy was junior Jeff Biggs (St. Louis, Mo.) who led the team in scoring with five goals. Sophomore Erik Swanson (Glenview, Ill.) added to the home-team's scoring punch with four goals and an assist of his own. Senior captain Mike Kenlay (Wilmette, Ill.) (1g, 3a), freshman Adam Swain (West Simsbury, Conn.) (3g, 1a) and sophomore Matt Brown (Burnaby, B.C.) rounded out the top Pioneer scorers with four points each.
The Pioneers looked to make a statement early in the game and did so by outscoring the Saints 7-0 in the first quarter. Kenlay led the blitz as he fired home a laser three minutes into the game (12:03). Biggs followed suit and scored three of the next five Denver goals to earn a hat trick in the first 13 minutes. Summing up the scoring in the first stanza was Brown with two goals and Swain, who found the net with five seconds remaining.
The second quarter began with Swanson scoring off a pass from junior Mike Hadden (Columbus, Ohio) at 13:43 to increase the lead to eight. New life seemed to breathe into Siena at that point and the road team tallied their first two goals of the game within a two-minute stretch. Pioneer sophomore Greer Hanlon (Libertyville, Ill.) smothered any hope for a first half comeback however, as he jump-started a four-goal run which included Swanson's second and third goals of the game. The Saints recorded the final tally of the period with 41 seconds remaining to bring the score to 11-3.
Denver held back nothing in the third quarter and exploded for eight goals including the completion of a hat trick for Swanson. Biggs also capped off his night during the romp, recording his fourth and fifth goals off passes from Brown and Kenlay, respectively. Hadden decided to join in the score-fest with 17 seconds on the clock to increase the Pioneer lead to 19-3 heading into the final outing.
The offensive stampede lessened in the fourth with Denver outscoring Siena 4-0. Senior Glenn Berglund (Norwalk, Conn.) found the back of the net for his first goal of the night 11 seconds into the quarter and was followed by Swain's third tally, senior John Sanders's (St. Louis, Mo.) first, and Swanson's fourth. Swain's goal was the team's fourth hat trick of the evening.
The Saints will look to rebound from a pair of losses out in Colorodo this weekend as they travel back east to face Manhattan on Saturday, March 8. Face-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
