Siena junior Scott Kim from the men's golf team and Mary Fletcher of the women's squad have been named Siena College's Leo Dufort Student Athletes of the Month for April. The duo has excelled both on the course in the MAAC Championships and in the classroom throughout their collegiate careers.
Kim, a River Edge, N.J. native, earned the top finish for the men's team in the 2015 MAAC Championships, finishing tied for fifth place. Kim was also the leading scorer for the Saints in the Til Duty Is Done Collegiate Invitational as well. Academically, Kim earned a 3.66 GPA this past fall and boasts a 3.49 overall GPA, earning him MAAC All-Academic honors.
Fletcher finished the 2015 MAAC Championships tied for seventh, helping the women's team to a second place finish. She shot the low score for the team in the Grand Canyon University Invite to open up the Saints' spring competition. The Fayetteville, N.Y. native, came into the spring semester with a 3.6 GPA, earned MAAC All-Academic honors and graduated this past Sunday with a degree in Biology.
The Leo Dufort Student Athlete of the Month Award is presented nine times annually (September-May) throughout the academic year. The award recognizes exemplary achievements in both academics and athletics. The late Leo Dufort received a B.S. in marketing and management from Siena in August of 1977. His entire academic career was completed on a part-time basis beginning in the spring of 1961, as a married adult while at the same time raising five children. He passed away suddenly of a heart attack while cross country skiing in February of 1993. His wife Jeanine wanted to do something to immortalize his memory. The original plaque was donated to athletics and the department began the Leo Dufort Student Athlete of the Month Award to help carry out his legacy. Dufort graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1954, was a Navy Veteran (USS Bennington) who worked for JL Hammett Co. at the time of his death.
