Women Lead, Men Tied for Eighth after Round One at MAAC Golf Championships
April 27, 2012
The 2012 MAAC Golf Championships began Friday with the first of three rounds in Orlando, Fla. The Siena women lead by eight shots after the tournament's first 18 holes, while the men sit tied for eighth.
On the women's side, the Saints lead second-place Hartford by eight shots. Fresh off her first-ever MAAC Women's Golfer of the Month award, Victoria Nguyen shot a first-round 77 to put her in sole possession of second place individually, while sophomore Kylie Strijek sits third after a day-one 78. The two are chasing Hartford's Sarah Sideranko, who fired a 74 and holds a three-shot lead.
Meanwhile, the men struggled on Friday, with senior Justin Deitz's 75 being the squad's low round of the day. Deitz is tied for 14th, five shots behind leader Jay Mulieri of Loyola (Md.), whose 70 led the Greyhounds to an 18-hole lead. However, the Green and Gold are in position to move up, sitting just a shot out of seventh and four shots out of sixth.
Play resumes Saturday with the tournament's second round.
