Senior Justin Deitz returned to the scene of his win at the 2010 Connecticut Cup Monday, and it was clear he liked what he saw. Deitz's rounds of 69 and 75 have him seventh in the 85-player field at the 2011 renewal, and he and the Saints are 10th with 18 holes to go.
Deitz had a share of the lead after his first-round 69, but fell off the pace a bit with his second round. Still, the upperclassman is just five shots off the lead, which is held by Hartford's Wally Gonzalez.
Junior Nick Miller was next-best on the team, shooting rounds of 78 and 75 to tie for 42nd. Walk-on Jim Sullivan debuted for the Saints Monday and fared solidly, tying for 46th with successive scores of 78 and 76. Siena's two-round score of 606 is 26 shots off the pace, with Sacred Heart leading Rhode Island by just four shots heading into Tuesday's final round.
Play begins at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, with final results expected around mid-day.
