MAAC Men First Round Results Get Acrobat Reader

After finishing a close second in last year's championship, the Siena men's golf team raced out to the clubhouse lead following the first round of the 2010 MAAC Championships Friday in Celebration, Fla. The Saints (300) lead Rider by two strokes entering tomorrow's middle 18 holes.

The Saints led all nine MAAC schools Friday in par 3 scoring (+6) and birdies (12) and were second as a team with 54 pars. Only eight strokes separate the top five teams however following a competitive first day. Following Siena and Rider (302) in the top half are Iona (305), Loyola (305) and Saint Peter's (308).

Siena was led through the first leg by Jeff Smith who shot a +2 round of 74 to place tied for sixth overall. Smith sunk a tournament-best tying four birdies on the afternoon. The Peacocks' Sean Fitzpatrick (68) is the individual leader through 18 of 54 holes at -4.

Two other Saints had impressive opening rounds as well as Justin Deitz and Don DeNyse III each shot 75 to tie for eighth overall. DeNyse accounted for the Saints' lone eagle of the day, while Deitz sunk three birdies.

Tomorrow's second round tees of at 8:30 a.m.
