The Siena men’s golf team did not get off to the start they wanted to in round one, finishing 23rd of 24 teams in the Whiting Turner Towson Invitational at Prospect Bay Country Club in Grasonville, Md. 

Jess Esposito was the Saints’ top finisher in the event shooting a nine-over-par which was tied for 79th in the 123 player field.

David Gushee was one stroke behind Esposito, and finished played in 86th place. 

Three other Saints finished within three strokes of one another.  Riley McGraw totaled a +13, Jim Sullivan tallied +14 and John Van Vranken rounded out the finishers with a +15.

Conditions changed throughout the say on the course.  During the morning the course dealt with very dry conditions, which soon gave way to win and rain that all the pairings endured.

Siena finished one stroke ahead of Maryland Eastern Shore, who currently sits in last.  Everyone in the field is currently chasing tournament leader William and Mary who is 43 strokes ahead of the Saints.

A total of five other MAAC programs are participating in the event.  Loyola University leads the pack and is in third overall with a +15.  Other conference schools include Fairfield University (+17), Iona College (+21), Saint Peter’s University (+30), and Canisius College (+40).

Siena will try to rise in the standings as they continue play tomorrow.
