Siena Holding Food Drive at Times Union Center Saturday Night
Dec. 27, 2012
In an effort to replenish post-holiday food supplies at the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York, Siena Athletics will host a food collection drive during the Siena men's basketball game against La Salle on Saturday, December 29 at 7 p.m. at the Times Union Center as part of the BlueShield of Northeastern new York Saints in the Community Program.
Basketball fans are encouraged to bring donations of canned or non-perishable food items to the game, such as canned vegetables, tuna, soups, pasta, and rice. Collection bins will be situated at all entrances to the arena. Fans who make a donation will receive a special coupon to use at the Dog House - the official Siena Athletics store at Times Union Center.
Fans can purchase tickets for the game by using the link at the top of the page, by phone at 1-800-30-EVENT, or in person at the Times Union Center Box Office. Vouchers for $5 tickets in Saints Heaven are available at select Dunkin' Donuts locations in the Capital Region and on the front of Thursday's Times Union newspaper.
Representatives from the Regional Food Bank will be stationed inside the main concourse of the arena to accept donations and sell raffle tickets for a chance to win a variety of exclusive Siena merchandise and prizes. All proceeds from the raffle will benefit the Food Bank's efforts in 2012.
"While many Capital Region residents have opened their wallets to donate generously to the Regional Food Bank this holiday season, we traditionally see food donations decrease quite significantly after the holidays," said Mark Quandt, executive director of the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York. "This effort by Siena Athletics and the men's basketball team will help us to replenish our supply and enable us to provide for families well into the New Year."
Following the food drive, members of the Siena men's basketball team will lend a hand by unloading and sorting the donated food items at the Food Bank on Wednesday, January 2 at 11:45 a.m. The items will be distributed to families throughout the Capital Region.
Supporting the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York has become an annual tradition for the Siena men's basketball team. This is the seventh consecutive year the student athletes have contributed to the Food Bank's efforts to end hunger in the greater Capital Region.
"The partnership between our athletic department and the Northeast regional Food Bank is one that hits at the heart of Siena's mission," said Siena College Director of Athletics John D'Argenio. "Our fans have been very generous in the past with donations, and by supporting the Food Bank's raffle, and we're confident this year will be even better."
The Regional Food Bank of Northeastern New York is a private, not-for-profit organization that collects large donations of food from the food industry for distribution to charitable agencies feeding the needy in a 23 county region of northeastern New York. The Food Bank provides more than 25 million pounds of food a year to over 1,000 agencies.
