ALBANY, NY - The battle for the Albany Cup returns to the Times Union Center when Siena Basketball faces crosstown rival UAlbany as part of the Houzz Gotham Classic presented by Ticket IQ at 7:30 PM. The men's matchup will be preceded by the women's Albany Cup showdown at 5 PM. Here's Ten Things to Know About The Albany Cup
1.) The crosstown rivals are meeting for the 54th time overall, with the Saints leading the all-time series 30-23
2.) Siena has won 10 of the 16 meetings since the rivalry was renewed during the 2001-02 season. UAlbany has won five of the past seven matchups, after the Saints had captured eight of the first nine at the Division I level.
3.) Ten of the 16 Division I meetings have been decided by single digits, including three which have gone to overtime
4.) The 15 Division I meetings between the programs at the Times Union Center have drawn an average of 10,910 fans. Twelve of the 15 crowds have exceeded 10,000 patrons.
5.) The Great Danes won last year's meeting 81-72 at SEFCU Arena. UAlbany opened an 18-point halftime lead, after holding Siena to just 23.1% shooting in the stanza. The Saints made 17 of their 19 shots to open the second half, and shot 73.9% overall in the period while scoring 52 points. Marquis Wright led Siena with 18 points, while David Nichols paced all scorers with 29 points for the Great Danes.
6.) Siena is playing its second of four games in the Houzz Gotham Classic presented by TicketIQ over a two-week span. The Saints fell at perennial national power Louisville 86-60 Wednesday night, and will travel to Bryant (Dec. 17) and Memphis (Dec. 20) to conclude tournament play.
7.) Sophomore forward Sammy Friday recorded his first collegiate double-double with career-highs of 15 points and 15 rebounds against the Cardinals. Friday had totaled 42 points and 32 rebounds in his previous 30 collegiate games.
8.) Siena is in the midst of a stretch where it plays five of seven games on the road to close out the month of December. The stretch is bookended by a pair of season long three-game homestands.
9.) The Saints are playing their seventh 20-win opponent from last season in their first nine games to open this year. Siena's 2017-18 non-conference opponents combined to average 20.5 wins and post a .617 win percentage last season.
10.) UAlbany posted a 21-14 overall record last season and earned a postseason berth to the CIT. The Great Danes were selected to finish second according to the America East Preseason Coaches' Poll after returning four starters and six letterwinners from last year's squad. At 9-1, UAlbany is off to its best Division I start, and best start overall since the 1993-94 season.
