Javion Ogunyemi signed with Siena College last year in large part to stay close to his ailing mother in their hometown of Troy.

Thomasina Schultz died of lung cancer in August, at only 37 years old, before Ogunyemi played his first game for the Saints.

"Lots of sleepless nights," Ogunyemi said. "Family trying to come closer together. It's tough, but I'm just trying to live my day every day."

Ogunyemi, a 6-foot-8, 230-pound freshman, is coping with his personal loss at the same time he is trying to adjust to college life and Division I basketball.
