McCaffery Named BCNY Coach of the Year

April 14, 2009

Siena College head men's basketball coach Fran McCaffery has been named the New Balance - Basketball Coaches Association of New York, Men's Division I Coach of the Year. McCaffery guided the Saints to a 27-8 record, a second straight MAAC Regular-Season and Tournament Championship and a second consecutive NCAA Second Round appearance.

McCaffery recently signed a new eight-year contract at the College. He has posted an 85-44 record in his four years in Loudonville, but this past season was unquestionably the program's most successful under his direction.

Siena equaled a program record with 27 wins - the most by any Siena team in the Division I era. The Saints equaled a MAAC record with 16 regular-season victories and then captured the Tournament Championship with three victories at Times Union Center in early March.

The program was rewarded with its highest seed ever in the NCAA Tournament - a #9 seed. Siena went on to defeat #8 Ohio State 74-72 in double overtime in Dayton in one of the Tournament's most exciting games. The Saints then took Louisville to the wire, leading with five minutes remaining, before falling 79-72.

McCaffery has led the Saints to three straight 20-win seasons - another first in the 68-year history of the program. Siena ranked #28 in the final ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Poll.

McCaffery welcomes back four starters and seven of the nine members of his everyday rotation next season. Early 2009-10 preseason polls by CBS, FOX and Yahoo! have the Saints ranked in the top-25.
