JERSEY CITY, N.J. - Alex Franklin scored 28 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Siena defeated Saint Peter's 77-64 to claim a share of the MAAC regular-season title Sunday at the Yanitelli Center. The Saints earned the #1 seed in the upcoming MAAC Tournament and an automatic bid to the Postseason NIT.
Siena and Rider finished tied for first in the MAAC standings, but the Saints won the tiebreaker thanks to wins by Marist and Niagara today.
The Saints out-scored Saint Peter's 42-28 in the second half, erasing a one point deficit and turning a closely contested game into a runaway.
It was the third straight win for Siena.
Edwin Ubiles continued his hot play with 19 points and six rebounds. The Saints shot 50% from the field in the second half and 48% for the game, controlling a 50-40 advantage in points in the paint.
Wesley Jenkins desperation 3-pointer gave Saint Peter's a 36-35 lead at the break. The Peacocks took advantage of eight first half Siena turnovers and senior Raul Orta had all eight of his points in the first 20 minutes of play.
Senior Todd Sowell carried Saint Peter's with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Jenkins had 13 points off the bench.
The Saints made 15-19 free throws and Saint Peter's was just 3-7 from the line. Siena also controlled an uncharacteristic 41-34 advantage on the glass, despite being out-rebounded 21-18 in the first half.
Josh Duell scored six of his eight points in the second half for Siena which scored the first eight points after intermission and didn't trail the rest of the way. Kenny Hasbrouck had nine points and Chris De la Rosa had four points, four assists and a steal in 17 minutes of action.
The regular-season championship is Siena's fifth in its 19 years in the MAAC and first since 2001.
