Carmen Maciariello begins his first season on McCaffery's staff as the director of basketball operations. Maciariello is a 2001 graduate of Siena College, and played his senior year for the Saints. "We are very excited to have Carmen on board," McCaffery said. "He brings a wealth of basketball knowledge, as well as an insider's view of what makes Siena so special. He will be a valuable asset in all aspects of our program." Maciariello, a 1996 graduate of Shenedehowa High School, was named the Albany Times Union Player of the Year after guiding the Plainsmen to a 22-2 record and a Section II Championship. He played the first three years of his collegiate career at the University of New Hampshire as a starting off guard. He received several individual accolades for the Wildcats including: 1998 Defensive Player of the Year, 1999 Mohegan Sun All-Tournament Team and 1999 New Mexico Inter Cable Classic All-Tournament Team. Maciariello was also a team captain in 1998-99 as a junior at UNH. In 1999-2000, Maciariello practiced with the Saints, but sat out per NCAA policy. That year, Siena advanced to the Second Round of the NIT under the direction of head coach Paul Hewitt. In 2000-2001, Maciariello helped the Saints to a 20-win season and a share of the MAAC Regular Season Championship. He was presented with the Rev. Benjamin Kuhn Student-Athlete Award at the annul men's basketball banquet. Upon graduation, Maciariello received Italian citizenship, and signed with Bignami Castel Maggiore a professional team in Bologna, Italy. Before he could play a game with the team, he tore his ACL in April of 2002. In December of the same year, he signed with GS Basket Massafra an Italian Minor League basketball team, where he averaged 30 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. In November of 2003, Maciariello advanced to the Professional League, signing with Virtus Ragusa in Sicily. He averaged four points and 15 minutes per game, including a career high 15 point, three rebound effort against Vitrus Bologna, a team with two future NBA players. In December of 2004, Maciariello declined a two-year contract offer from the professional team Cimberio Novara to return to the States and pursue a career in coaching. Maciariello was hired as a one-on-one aid at Southgate Elementary School in Loudonville in January of this year. He also assumed duties as co-Head Coach for the Junior Varsity team at Albany Academy, and spent this past season as the head coach for the Albany City Rocks 17 and under team. Maciariello will assist with myriad of a responsibilities related to the daily upkeep of the Saints' program. He currently resides in Clifton Park, N.Y. |
