The 2016-17 version of the Siena Baseball squad received a two-run single from freshman outfielder Zach Durfee in the bottom of the ninth inning to rally for the walkoff win over the alumni team 6-5 in a well-played, offensive display under overcast skies Saturday in the 41st renewal of the rivalry.
The alumni harbored a 5-4 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth, but the varsity quickly put an end to the game. Junior catcher Phil Madonna led off with a single to right, and sophomore first baseman Brian Kelly doubled to right to set the stage. Durfee then promptly singled to score the game-tying and winning runs.
New Jersey natives Tyler Martis and Vincent Citro led the alumni with four and three hits respectively, with Citro also knocking in two runs. Other alumni producing with two hits were Tim Christman, John Parmeter, and Dave Hoffman. Citro, an infielder in his playing days, also hurled four shutout innings on the mound.
