Larry Balkwill has swung a big bat this year.

It began in the spring when the junior catcher from Chatham led the Siena Saints with a career-high six home runs.

Next came a summer stint in the Valley Baseball League where he set a franchise record for the Haymarket (Va.) Senators with 10 homers.

Then he came home and belted three homers to help the Windsor Selects win the Ontario junior elimination tournament.

"I've just made a couple adjustments to my approach," said Balkwill, 21. "I'm working out and getting a lot stronger. (I'm) becoming a smarter hitter."

He's taken his powerful stroke to the Canadian junior championship where the Selects will try to defend their title in Trois-Rivieres, Que. Play begins Thursday.

Balkwill is making his fifth trip to a national championship. He has two gold medals, one silver and one bronze.
