Rising seniors Ed Lewicki and Justin Esquerra have been elected to serve as captains for the 2015 Siena baseball season. The pair was selected with an overwhelming majority of the annual vote of team members.
"I am very pleased with the selection of Ed and Justin as co-captains," head coach Tony Rossi said. "Through their leadership, we look forward to returning to the MAAC Tournament."
Lewicki has strong skills and an outstanding work ethic on the mound. A native of Arlington, Vt., he has been a key member of the Saints' rotation since his freshman year. This past season he started 14 games and won 4 conference games, posting an outstanding MAAC ERA of 2.11. Lewicki was tied for second in the conference for fewest runs allowed in conference games among regular starters with 10. For his career he has made 56 appearances and 23 starts, posting a 4.31 ERA and a 12-12 record.
"We expect this to be a big year for Eddie on the field and in his newly acquired leadership role," Rossi said. "We know he will do an outstanding job."
Esquerra started all 60 games in his first season with the Saints this spring, hitting .290 with a team-best 29 RBI.
"It is a great credit to Justin to be here for one year and have his teammates entrust the team leadership role to him," Rossi said. "He's an exceptionally hard worker, one of the top hitters in the league and a solid bat in the middle of the lineup. He is a throw-back type player, very mentally and physically tough. I am happy that he is going to be a captain."
