Fans it is with great appreciation and sadness today that we must say farewell to the seven members of the Siena College baseball class of 2002. As a group, this class has amassed over 100 victories and has been triumphant in two thirds of its conference games. Entering this season, they already had claimed two MAAC regular-season titles and one Tournament Championship as freshmen in 1999. This season, they have each stepped up their games and as a result have left their legacy in the Siena record books and again have the Saints set for a return trip to next week's conference championships where they will attempt a return to the NCAA Tournament. Recently, Head Coach Tony Rossi noted that this may be the most productive senior class he has coached in his 33 years with the program. At this time, we would like to recognize each member individually.

Despite playing just one full year with the Green and Gold, this senior captain has made the 2002 season one to remember. On pace to finish this season with one of the top five batting averages in school history, this Saint could become just the second player since the program turned Division I 25 years ago to bat over .400. His at bats also qualify him on the school’s career chart, where he will likely finish second all-time and tops in the modern era. He enters today’s regular-season finale with a .408 batting average and he has launched five home runs and collected 25 RBI so far. On the basepaths, he has stolen 19 bases in just 25 attempts. Earlier this year, he was recognized as the MAAC Player of the Week after batting .765 in five Siena wins. More impressive, against MAAC opponents this season, he is batting .500 with 43 hits in 86 at bats, and has stolen 11 bases… #12 Josh Kean.

A four-year member of the Siena pitching staff, our next senior has thrown over 130 innings in his career. Last season, he enjoyed a breakout year for the Saints tying for the team lead with five victories. In 60 innings of work, he allowed just 53 hits while striking out a team-high 38 batters and boasting a 3.54 ERA. He was also a part of four shutouts and held the opposition to a team-low .241 batting average. This year, he is second on the team with 10 starts and has made13 appearances on the hill. He had several strong outings over his four-year career including a 10-strikeout outing against UMass in 2000 and a shutout of Jacksonville State as a junior. He has also excelled in the classroom, as evidenced by his inclusion on the MAAC All-Academic Team the past three seasons…#31 Brent Wengert.

The most effective and decorated pitcher ever to wear the Green and Gold, our next senior has enjoyed a storied four-year career with the Saints. It didn’t take long for him to make his impact, as he set the school record for victories in a season as a freshman-- winning his first nine collegiate starts. He was named MAAC Tournament MVP after pitching Siena to a first round win over Rider and eventual NCAA Tournament berth. As a sophomore, he was 5-4 with a 4.54 ERA in a school record 83 innings pitched. Last season, he chalked up three more wins and made his second MAAC Tournament appearance. As a senior, he has again worked his way to the front of the Saints pitching rotation where he owns a 6-3 record and a career-best 3.25 ERA. Earlier this year, he became the winningest pitcher in school history-- he now stands with 23 career victories. He also became the first Siena pitcher ever to strikeout more than 200 batters in his career. A tireless worker on and off the field, he is a three-time member of the MAAC All Academic Team… #19 Dave Pahucki.
