2002 Senior Day

Recap |  Box Score

Fans it is with great appreciation and sadness today that we must say farewell to the seven members of the Siena College baseball class of 2002. As a group, this class has amassed over 100 victories and has been triumphant in two thirds of its conference games. Entering this season, they already had claimed two MAAC regular-season titles and one Tournament Championship as freshmen in 1999. This season, they have each stepped up their games and as a result have left their legacy in the Siena record books and again have the Saints set for a return trip to next week's conference championships where they will attempt a return to the NCAA Tournament. Recently, Head Coach Tony Rossi noted that this may be the most productive senior class he has coached in his 33 years with the program. At this time, we would like to recognize each member individually.

Our next honoree is one of the top catchers in school history. He will graduate third on the school’s all-time hit charts and second in RBI and home runs. This season, he has developed into the league’s top receiver and one of the best in the region, catching the eye of professional scouts around the nation. Behind the dish, he has thrown out 20 of the 58 runners who have attempted to steal on him including 11 of 19 in MAAC games—several of which he tossed out from his knees. Thanks in part to his monstrous senior campaign, he has notched 47 multi-hit games and 33 multi-RBI games in his four year career. He was named to the all-MAAC Team as a sophomore and was recognized as the conference’s Player of the Week last season. He also set the school record for doubles in a game last season and will graduate second on the all-time career charts in that category. This season, his highlight performance came in a 22-9 rout of CW Post as he collected five hits, seven RBI, four runs scored and two home runs. His 12 home runs this season place him second on the all-time home run charts as well. Needless to say, he will be a major component of any success the Saints may have in the upcoming MAAC Championships… #33 Jim Buckley.

A four year member of the Saints, our next honoree has been a clutch competitor throughout his four years with the program. He has appeared in nearly 100 games with the Green and Gold collecting 51 hits and 29 RBI. Last year he was the team’s everyday DH and this season he has started 15 times and been called upon as a pinch hitter with the game on the line in several other contests. A tireless worker who has done whatever it takes to help the program succeed during his stay, he graduates with a degree in history on Sunday…#5 Steve Castellani.
