If the Siena baseball team is going to surprise this season and return to the MAAC Championships, they will need their seniors to show the way. So far, so good. Larry Balkwill took home the first MAAC Player of the Week award Monday after delivering in one of the biggest non-league wins the program has had in years.
Balkwill (Chatham, Ontario, Canada) hit safely in all three games during Siena's season-opening three-game set at perennial power Central Florida, batting .364 with three RBI. He went 2-for-4 with three RBI and the big blow in the game - a two-out, two-run single in the Saints' 7-4 upset win Saturday. Balkwill posted a .417 on-base percentage, a .455 slugging percentage and a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage with 15 putouts and an assist.
Balkwill enjoyed a strong summer, earning First Team All-Star honors on the all-Canadian team. He was named to the MAAC All-Academic Team last season after batting .281 with a team-best six home runs and 29 RBI in 54 games played.
Balkwill and the Saints return to action this weekend at William and Mary.
