Varsity Squeaks Out 2-1 Win Over Alumni
Sept. 18, 2007
Box Score
~By Coach Tony Rossi On a sunny crisp Saturday afternoon, the varsity defeated the alumni in a pitchers battle 2-1. In one of the largest attended games ever, the two teams battled for 9 innings with the varsity scoring the winning run in the bottom of the 7th inning when senior outfielder Eric Mruczek scored on a wild pitch. Mruczek opened the 7th with a single, moved to third on junior outfielder Nick Messinger's single, and scored on the wild pitch. The varsity got on the board first when in the 4th inning freshman first baseman Kevin Quaranto opened with a walk, and eventually scored on a fielder's choice. The alumni tied it up in the 5th when with two outs, former pitcher Josh Copskey singled, and scored on a long double by catcher Greg Zampier. Sophomore catcher Gary DerHagopian led the varsity with two hits. All pitchers on both teams did an outstanding job. If there was an MVP for the alumni it would have to be shared by former pitcher Josh Copskey, who went 1-1, scored the only run, and threw two shutout innings. Zampier, who came about two feet short from hitting a homerun was also a standout as he eventually chugged into second base with a double, and knocked in the only alumni run.
There were 25 alumni in attendance with 20 of them playing. They were cheered on by Dan Devine, Ralph Miccio, Chris Caporale, and Jim Gaetani (better late then never). Also in attendance was recent major leaguer John Lannan. John spent five weeks in the major leagues in July and August gaining 2 victories. All alumni are looking forward to next year's game. |
