Siena kept pace Saturday in its bid for the conference regular season title, sweeping a doubleheader at Saint Peter's, 1-0 and 12-1. With the wins, and Marist's split with Niagara, the Saints assumed first place in the MAAC standings.
Siena, 22-19 overall, is 14-3 in the MAAC, moving it to the top spot with a .824 winning percentage, just ahead of previous leader Marist, which is 16-4 (.800) after splitting with fourth-place Niagara on Saturday. Saint Peter's is 4-37 overall and 2-17 in the MAAC.
Siena junior Ken Grant, and Saint Peter's freshman RHP Santo Maertz (1-10) matched zeros for eight innings.
The visitors finally built what would be an unearned run in the top of the ninth, when LF Gabe Perez, leading off, was hit by a soft 1-2 breaking ball that plunked Perez on the shoulder.
Perez then stole second and when the throw from catcher bounced a few feet into the outfield, Perez got up and raced to third, where he scored on 1B Rick Seltzer's sac fly to center.
Freshman RHP Craig Chaput took the mound in the ninth for Siena and earned his second save with a hitless inning that included a two-out walk to Peacock 3B Chris Hernandez.
Grant got the win for Siena, tossing 8 scoreless innings, allowing 3 hits--none after Chris Jodice's single leading off the third. Grant struck out 6 and walked 2.
For Saint Peter's, Maertz pitched a complete game, allowing 7 singles and a double. Maertz walked two and did not record a strikeout.
The Siena double was by freshman Jake Willis, who was 2-for-4. Classmate Michael Ambury was 2-for-3.
The nightcap was different, as Siena parlayed 11 singles, 6 walks, 2 hit-by-pitch and 7 Saint Peter's errors into 12 runs--10 unearned, for a comfortable 12-1 win.
Siena's junior LHP John Lannan went the distance, upping his record to 7-2 by scattering 10 Saint Peter's singles. Lannan's run was unearned and he struck out 10, while walking one.
Saint Peter's starter, junior RHP Ben Gallo (1-3) got the loss, pitching 3.2 innings. He allowed 7 singles and 10 runs--just one earned--struck out 3 and walked 3.
After a scoreless first inning, the Saints broke through for five unearned runs in the second inning, with the first run scoring on a play that included two Saint Peter's errors. Four of the runs scored after two were out.
Siena got an earned run in the third inning and then tacked on 4 unearned runs in the fifth. Eric Hildenbrand, who would finish the game 4-for-5, with 4 RBI, drove home three with a bases-loaded two-out double into the right center field gap. Siena closed out its scoring with two runs--one earned--in the seventh.
The run for Saint Peter's was also unearned, as the Peacocks added a pair of hits to Siena's only error of the game, as LF Chris Innis, who led off the Peacock fourth with a single, eventually scored on a single by 1B Andrew Gitto.
Innis, Mike Scordato and Santo Maertz each collected a pair of hits for the Peacocks in the nightcap.
In addition to Hildenbrand's 4-for-5, Siena leadoff man, SS Chris Klepps was 2-for-5.
The teams will close out the 3-game MAAC series on Sunday with a single game, starting at noon.
