Senior Jeremy Cabot hurled a complete game gem, allowing only a solo home run in the ninth inning, and Kevin Roberts collected half of Siena's (15-29-1/13-7 MAAC) six hits driving in a pair of runs as the Saints topped Canisius 6-1 in the final contest of a three-game conference set in Loudonville Sunday afternoon. The Saints, now undefeated in their last eight games, moved into third place with their sixth straight MAAC win.
Cabot was dominant all afternoon, striking out seven batters and scattering six hits. He allowed just one Golden Griffin to reach third base prior to Ishmael Cox's ninth inning blast to left field. Cabot improved to 4-7 on the season, 4-3 in the MAAC in picking up his fifth complete game of the year.
The Saints broke the ice with two runs in the third inning as Roberts singled through the right side of the infield scoring Brent Kunkle. Freshman Matt Gidaly, who preceded Roberts with a single, came around to score on a ground ball by Shawn Hampton.
Siena added to its lead in the fifth inning with three unearned runs following a two out fielding error by Cox. Brian Schmotzer was the first to take advantage of the miscue with an RBI single to left and senior catcher Matt Mueller followed with a run-scoring double to the left centerfield gap. Roberts singled home Siena's final run of the day with two outs in the sixth inning.
The Saints will be back in action at Siena Field Tuesday afternoon as they play host to UMass at 4 p.m. Siena's hosts archrival Marist in a crucial MAAC series next weekend.
