Freshman Anthony Giansanti went 4-for-5 with two RBI in the opener and classmate Gary DerHagopian had five hits on the day as Siena swept a MAAC baseball doubleheader at Fairfield 9-7 and 4-2 Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Matt Moberg pitched 6.1 innings allowing just two runs to pick up the win in the nightcap.
Siena led the opener 9-2 after scoring three runs in the second, two in the fourth and four in the seventh. Giansanti singled home a run in the second, then later stole third and scored on a throwing error by Fairfield's catcher. DerHagopian doubled and scored in the inning - one of his three game one hits.
DerHagopian's second double of the game in the fourth inning scored two more runs, and Giansanti's RBI double highlighted the seventh inning rally.
Fairfield scored twice in the first off Siena starter Craig Chaput who picked up his second straight win. Chaput did not allow another run until the eighth, when the Stags chased him from the game and scored five times to tighten the gap. Will Hassett struck out five in two innings of work to pick up his second straight save.
The Saints staked Moberg to an early 2-0 lead in the second game, scoring twice in their first at bat. Chris Klepps singled home Jake Willis who started the game with a single to left field and Phil Chail's RBI groundout scored Jason DeFilippo.
Siena took a 4-0 lead in the fourth following RBI singles from Giansanti and Michael Ambury. Fairfield scored its only two runs in the fifth on back-to-back run-scoring singles by Patrick Hoban and Matt Tiagwad.
Moberg and reliever James Pacifico closed the door from there. Moberg scattered eight and struck out two.
The Saints will look to complete the series sweep Sunday at noon.
