LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Fausto Franco and Tony Cipolla each went deep as the Siena baseball team (16-21/10-5 MAAC) remained red-hot with a 13-2 dusting of Fairfield (13-22/6-9 MAAC) at Siena Field Sunday afternoon. Freshman Ken Grant worked seven strong innings to pick up his team-leading fourth victory of the season.
Every Siena player collected a hit for third game this week as the Saints won for the 13th time in their last 16 games. Siena has also won eight of its last nine MAAC games after opening conference play 2-4. The Saints had 13 hits on the afternoon and took advantage of five Fairfield errors to pull off the rout. Defensively, Siena played its second consecutive error free game and received another solid outing on the mound.
Grant struck out four batters, allowed just five hits and surrendered only one walk in his seven innings of work. He allowed just one run leaving with a 10-1 lead.
Senior catcher Jim Buckley (Kansas City, Mo./Park Hill) drove in the games first run with an RBI double to right centerfield in the first inning. It was one of three hits Buckley had on the day. In the bottom of the second, Franco launched his second career home run (first of season) over the left field wall. The three-run blast gave Siena an early 4-0 lead.
The Saints struck for four runs in the fourth on RBI hits from Cipolla and Kevin Roberts. Cipolla's home run, a three-run shot in the eighth accounted for the final margin. Franco added a third inning double to finish as one of the three Saints with multi-hit games. The Green and Gold scored in six of their eight at bats.
Siena returns to action on Tuesday at CW Post before returning to Albany for a 4 p.m. doubleheader against New York Tech on Wednesday at Bleecker Stadium.
