LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Siena Baseball completed the series sweep with a 5-4 win over Iona at Siena Field. Winners of six in a row, the Saints improved their MAAC-leading record to 10-2.
Senior captain John Rooney and classmate Vincent Citro each tallied a pair of hits for the Saints (13-24, 10-2). With his two hits, Rooney joined Citro as two of 12 members of the Saints’ 200-Hit Club.
Siena took advantage of timely hitting to plate four runs on four hits in the third to claim a 5-1 lead. Brian Fay and Dave Hoffman each drove in runs and Tyler Martis capped the inning with a two-run double, chasing Iona (6-22, 3-9) starter Bill Maier.
The Gaels chipped away adding a single run in the fifth and added a pair of runs in the seventh on RBI singles by Joe Torres and Jimmy Giuliano to rally within one.
But Iona would get no closer. The combination of Andres Ortiz and Justin Esquerra gunned down the potential game-tying run at the plate and Matt Quintana retired all four batters he faced to earn his first save of the season.
After playing their first 34 games on the road, Siena continues its 10-game homestand on Tuesday at 4 p.m. vs. Fairleigh Dickinson.
