NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. - Iona College (9-10/3-2 MAAC) scored seven runs in its final three at bats to break open a tight game and cruise to a 10-3 victory in the first game of a doubleheader sweep of Siena (3-17/2-3) at JB Buono Field in New Rochelle Friday afternoon. The Gaels scored six runs off Siena starter Justin Knoff in the third inning of game two en route to an easy 8-0 win.
Senior Ryan Finn collected a pair of doubles in the opener and drove in two runs in defeat. Sophomore Kevin Roberts, junior Matt Mueller and senior Josh Kean had two hits a piece for the Saints. Siena was troubled by an inconsistent defense that committed five errors on the afternoon leading to eight unearned runs.
Iona catcher Jason Motte had four hits and four RBI in the opener to pace the victors. Travis Garcia homered and scored two runs and Mike Perrone had two hits and three runs scored.
In the nightcap, the Saints failed to recover from a controversial first inning call that resulted in the ejection of Head Coach Tony Rossi. With two men on, defending MAAC Player of the Year Finn crushed a ball down the left field line. The ball was ruled foul and the Gaels shut the door on the Saints the rest of the way.
Following two errors in the third inning, Iona put the game away with a six spot. Chris Lombardo's single drove in a pair of runs as did Garcia's three batters later. The duo had two hits a piece in the nightcap. Kean had another two of Siena's three hits in the game.
The two teams will complete their weekend series with a single game tomorrow afternoon.
