Brian Fay connects on his first career home run
March 26, 2013
Mark McCants scored the game-winning run on a throwing error as Army rallied to score twice with two outs in the ninth to topple Siena 7-6 in non-league action Tuesday at West Point. Mike Allen's two-run double in the seventh had given Siena a 6-5 lead.
Siena led 4-0 after scoring once in the first, twice in the fourth and once in the fifth. Starter Rick Morales held the Black Knights to just two hits in his first four innings, but he was relieved after walking the first two men he faced in the fifth.
Army got half the runs back in the fifth and took a 5-4 lead with three runs in the sixth before Allen delivered his second huge hit in the last three games.
Siena reliever Neil Fryer got the last two outs in the eighth and retired two of the first three men he faced in the ninth before McCants singled home the equalizer. McCants advanced to second on the throw home and came around to score on a throwing error by catcher Kyle Baldani after an Andrew Johnson single.
Andres Ortiz, Larry Balkwill and Brian Fay each had two hits for the Saints, and Fay connected for his first career home run to lead off the fourth. Leadoff man Vincent Citro reached base in all four of his plate appearances, drawing three walks.
McCants was the offensive star for Army, finishing 3-for-5 with two runs scored and the key RBI.
Siena has a quick turn and a very busy week. The Saints travel to face Dartmouth tomorrow before hosting Marist Thursday and Saturday.
