March 25, 2002
Luis Khoury's first inning single gave Siena an early 2-0 lead and Ryan Finn collected his fourth home run of the season later in the game to pace Siena's series-clinching 7-5 victory over Manhattan College at Van Cortland Park Monday afternoon. The Jaspers fall to 11-7 overall and 1-2 in the MAAC, while Siena took two of three from the Jaspers and improves to 3-15 and 2-1 in the MAAC.
Siena jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. With two on and two out, Luis Khoury lined a basehit to centerfield to score both baserunners. But in the bottom of the inning, Manhattan rallied for three runs on three hits. After Jonathan Holzer (Brooklyn, NY) doubled to right, freshman Chris Gaskin (Rego Park, NY) lined a run-scoring single to left center for the first Jaspers run of the game. Wendell Anderson (East Hartford, CT) drew a walk, and Josh Greco (Kensington, CT) blasted a double to right field, and both Anderson and Gaskin came around to score to put the Jaspers up 3-2. Greco was gunned down at third to end the Jasper rally.
Siena tacked on two more runs in the top of the third on RBI-singles by Ryan Finn and Tony Cipolla. After freshman Mike Parisi (Lake Grove, NY) struck out the side in the top of the fifth, Manhattan rallied to tie the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the inning. Freshman Gary Diaz (Naugatuck, CT) led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Holzer. Matt Cucurullo (Valhalla, NY) stepped in and ripped a double down the right field line to score Diaz. Siena regained the lead in the top of the sixth on an RBI-single by Josh Kean to make it 5-4.
Manhattan had its chances in the next three innings but was unable to push a run across. Siena added insurance runs in the final two innings, one in the eighth on an RBI-single by Fausto Franco and one in the ninth on a solo homerun by Finn to extend the lead to 7-4.
Trailing by three, Gaskin led of the bottom of the ninth with a walk. Anderson singled to right field and Gaskin advanced to third on the hit-and-run. Greco then grounded into a 4-6-3 double play, but Gaskin scored to make it 7-5. Frank Cappello (Pelham, NY) pinch-hit for Zach Sousa (Waterford, CT) but went down on strikes to end the game.
Greco was 1-4 with three RBI, while Diaz was 3-4 with a run scored. Gaskin was 2-4 with an RBI and two runs scored, and Holzer was also 2-4 with a run scored. Parisi (3-2) took the loss for the Jaspers, working six innings and allowing three runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts and two walks.
