Siena Baseball notched its first series win of 2017 with a 9-8 victory Sunday over the Racers. After splitting the Saturday doubleheader, the two teams combined for 17 runs in game three with the Saints plating three in the eighth to win the game and series. Joe Drpich had the game-winning home run and Phil Madonna added 2 RBIs in the game for the Saints.
Early in the rubber match, Murray State (6-4) took a 1-0 lead on a solo homerun in the first before the Saints (2-9) took their first lead, 2-0, in the second on Madonna's first career blast along with an RBI double by Zach Durfee.
The Racers and Saints both added a run each in the next couple innings to make it 3-2 Siena heading into the bottom of the fourth when the Racers exploded for six runs to take an 8-3 lead in the series decider.
The Saints would continue to battle, responding with three runs in the top of the fifth to close the gap at 8-6. Madonna and Chris Davignon each had RBI doubles in the frame. Matt Hamel added one of his three hits in the inning to record an RBI and bring home Davignon.
Siena completed the comeback in the eighth when Drpich blasted a two-run shot over the fence after a groundout to put the Saints on top 9-8. It was the 17th homer of his career and first this season. Sophomore pitcher Dylan D'Anna closed out the game for Siena retiring three straight batters to pick up his first save of the season. Freshman pitcher Danny Hobbs picked up his first collegiate win.
Siena will head to Davidson, North Carolina on Saturday, March 11 for a three-game series with Davidson. The Saints will play two on Saturday, with game one beginning at 1 p.m. The series will conclude with a 1 p.m. game on Sunday, March 12.
