Siena Baseball opened up a three-game set in Murray, KY on Saturday with two games against the Murray State Racers. The Saints picked up their first victory of the season in game one, besting the Racers 8-3. In game two, Murray State recorded an 11-3 victory to tie the series at one game each.
Game One: Siena 8, Murray State 3
Siena (1-9) put one in the win column for the first time in the early season in game one. Sophomore hurler Tommy Miller led a great pitching effort by the Saints. Miller went six innings, allowing just one earned run on four hits, with five strikeouts. Matt Pierce and Dylan D'Anna combined for a scoreless final three innings to secure the win for Siena.
Offensively, the Saints blasted two home runs and one triple in the contest. Freshman Alex Brickman recorded his first collegiate home run on a two-run shot in the fourth inning. Sophomore Matt Hamel added the first of his career on a solo shot in the eighth. In the sixth, catcher Phil Madonna hit an RBI triple, scoring Brian Kelly who had previously stolen second.
Siena totaled 14 hits in the contest to take the win 8-3 over Murray State (6-3) and to take a one-game lead in the series.
Game Two: Murray State 11, Siena 3
The Saints dropped the second game of the series 11-3. Junior outfielder Dan Lowndes homered in the game for Siena.
Siena jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a double by Jordan Bishop followed by an RBI single by Brian Kelly. Unfortunately, the Racers tied it up on a solo home run in the bottom half of the frame and would never trail after taking a 2-1 lead in the second. Murray State added two runs in the third and one in each of the fourth and sixth innings before plating five in the seventh to take an 11-3 win and even the series at one win apiece.
The Saints' offense put up five total hits in the game, compared to 16 for the Racers. Freshman Brendan White got the start on the mound for Siena, going five innings, allowing five earned runs.
Siena will go for the series win against Murray State on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. from Murray, KY.
