DeLand, Fla. - Chris Johnson went 4-for-6 to lead Stetson baseball to a 10-0 shut out against Siena Friday night in the first game of a three-game weekend series at Melching Field.
Stetson (5-4) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Shane Jordan (Sarasota, Fla.) crossed the plate on a wild pitch after reaching base on balls. The Hatters added two runs in the next inning when Nick Palmisano (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) came home on a passed ball and a Brian Bocock (Dayton, Va.) RBI single moved home Joe Kurelic (Alpharetta, Ga.).
In the bottom of the fourth, Joey Wilson (Lexington, Ky.) notched a double down the left field line and was sent home on an RBI single up the middle by Braedyn Pruitt (West Palm Beach, Fla.). Pruitt then scored on a wild pitch and Palmisano walked with bases loaded for the 6-0 Hatter lead.
A Palmisano solo homer and a Wilson RBI single extended Stetson's lead to 8-0 in the sixth. The Hatters added single runs in the seventh and eighth on a Siena error and an RBI double by Johnson (Ft. Myers, Fla.).
Johnson led a 15-hit performance by the Hatters in their first shut out since a 16-0 win on May 14 last year against Appalachian State. Palmisano was 1-for-2 with three walks and two RBIs and Wilson finished the game 2-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored.
Senior Cy McCuen (Port St. Lucie, Fla.) improved to 2-0 with the win on the mound for the Hatters, allowing five hits while striking out six in seven innings of work.
Ken Grant (0-1) suffered the loss for the Saints (1-1), allowing five earned runs off six hits in the first three and one-thirds innings.
Stetson and Siena will face off again Saturday for two nine-inning games at Melching Field. First pitch of game one is set for 12 p.m.
