Florida Gulf Coast grabbed the lead with a four-run fourth and held off a late Siena charge to post a 9-5 victory Wednesday in Fort Myers, Fla. Joe Drpich blasted a 420-foot home run to center in the eight to bring the Saints within a run.
The Saints pushed two runs across in their first at bat and chased FGCU starter Jack English from the game after Brian Fay's two-run double to left centerfield.
Siena starter Rick Morales didn't allow a hit through the first three innings, but he gave up five in a four-run fourth that flipped the game. Tyler Selesky drove home the first run with a RBI single and Blake Berger followed with a two-run double that gave the Eagles the lead for good.
FGCU pushed the lead to 6-3 with two runs in the sixth. Pinch runner Gage Morey scored on a wild pitch and Adam Eenantz drove a bard single to left to chase home Brian Pruett.
Drpich made a game of it with his long home run with two outs in the eighth after Justin Esquerra had ripped a double down the left field line to start the inning. Colton Bottomley eliminated any hopes of a Siena comeback with a bases loaded single to right that plated two of FGCU's three insurance runs in the bottom of the frame.
Drpich joined classmate Jordan Bishop with two hits for the Saints. FGCU pounded out
Siena falls to 1-6 on the season. They return to the site of their first win - Port St. Lucie - for a four-game series with Michigan this weekend. First pitch of Friday's game is scheduled for 1 p.m.
