Siena Baseball loaded the bases in the ninth inning with the potential tying run at first, but couldn’t break through as Gardner-Webb held on for a 4-1 win to complete the four-game series sweep at John H. Moss Stadium in Boiling Springs, North Carolina. MAAC Preseason Player of the Year Joe Drpich continued his torrid start to 2018, going 3-4 to raise his batting average to .407 through the first seven games of the season.
Siena (0-7) tallied seven of its 11 hits over the final two frames, however the Saints were only able to cash in for one run. Siena stranded five base runners over the final two innings, and left 10 men on base overall on the afternoon.
Gardner-Webb (7-1) scored single runs in the second, third, fourth, and six innings to slowly build their advantage. Seven different batters each recorded one hit apiece to pace a balanced attack, while Landon Mitchell scattered four hits over six shutout innings to record the victory on the mound.
Siena put two of the first three men on to open the ninth, and bring the potential tying run to the plate with one out. Following a strikeout, junior shortstop Marcos Campos later singled to load the bases with two outs, but Jarrett Thompson induced a game-ending fielder’s choice to wriggle out of trouble.
Campos and Bishop joined Drpich in posting multiple-hit performances, in tallying two hits apiece. Junior righthander John Nolan was saddled with the loss for the Saints, despite throwing five solid innings of work.
Siena returns to North Carolina next weekend for another four-game series, when the Saints face Charlotte beginning Friday at 3 p.m.
