Siena jumped out to a 5-0 lead after its first two at bats, but Florida used two big innings to post a come-from-behind 10-7 win in the season opener for both schools Friday night before 3,408 fans at McKethan Stadium in Gainesville.
The Saints scored once in their first at bat and four times in the top of the second to grab a big early lead. Chris Klepps doubled to start the game and scored a run in each of the first two innings. Moises Rivera singled him home in the first and his grand slam in the second staked starter Craig Charput to a big early lead.
The Gators answered in the bottom of the stanza with five runs on four
hits and an error to knot the contest at 5-5. Senior Jon Townsend homered on opening night for the second straight year to put Florida on the board.
Sophomore Anthony Giansanti moved the Saints back in front with a
one-out homer in the third.
Cole Figueroa delivered his second two-out RBI of the night with a double to left center in the fourth that tied the game at 6-6.
Chaput's night was finished after five innings. The junior right hander gave up eight hits and three earned runs.
Brandon McArthur's two-run triple highlighted a four-run sixth that gave Florida the lead for good.
Chris Klepps' solo homer in the ninth accounted for the final run of the game.
Led by multiple-hit outings from Rivera (2-for-4, five RBI), Klepps (2-for-4, three runs), Jake Willis (2-for-5) and Nick Messinger (2-for-4), the Saints out-hit the Gators, 12-11.
Florida will send junior right-hander Patrick Keating (Harrisburg,
Ill.) to the hill against Siena junior left-hander Matt Moberg tomorrow
afternoon at 2.
