Siena Splits With Charlotte to Open Baseball Season

The Siena baseball team split a doubleheader with Charlotte in their season-opener. The 49ers won the first game, 14-6, on the strength of 14 hits. In the second game, Siena scored three runs in the ninth inning to defeat Charlotte, 8-5.
Senior Thomas Bowker paced the 49ers with four hits including a double and a home run, and he also scored four runs in the two games. Kris Rochelle and Randall Poplin each had three hits for the 49ers in the doubleheader.
Siena was led by senior Kevin Roberts who had three hits including a home run, three RBI and three runs.
In game one, Adam Willard paced the 49ers with two hits and five RBI.
Siena took an early 2-0 lead after two innings in the first game. Kevin Roberts led off the game with a solo home run over the center field wall. Then, Siena's Scott King, who reached base on a double to right center field, scored on Matt Gidaly's sacrifice fly to right field in the second inning.
Rochelle cut the Siena lead in half when he scored on Bowker's double to center field in the third inning.
Charlotte took a 6-2 lead when they exploded for five runs on four hits in the sixth inning. The 49ers tied the score, 2-2, when Michael Roane scored on Jamie Rusco's bases loaded walk. The big hits of the inning were Brian Scafe's two-run double down the right field line and Adam Willard's two-run single to right field.
Then, Siena tied the score 6-6 with four runs on two hits in the seventh inning. The big blow of the inning was Tony Cipolla's two-run double down the left field line.
Charlotte regained the lead for good with eight run on seven hits in the bottom of the seventh inning. The big hit of the inning was Willard's three-run blast off the scoreboard in right center field. Then, Roane's two-run home run over the left field wall concluded the scoring in game one.
In game two, Siena again took an early 2-0 lead with a couple runs caused by a Charlotte fielding error in the first inning.
The 49ers cut the Siena lead in half when Bowker led off the 49ers half of the first inning with a home run over the left field wall.
Charlotte tied the score, 2-2, when Rochelle scored on Cory Lane's single to left center field in the second inning.
Then, Charlotte took their first lead of the game when Poplin connected on a solo home run off the scoreboard in the third inning.
Siena again tied the score with a run in the fifth inning.
The 49ers regained the lead on Rusco's two-run blast over the right center field scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Siena scored the game's final five runs to close out the victory. Siena tied the score, 5-5, when Roberts connected on a two-run single to left field in the sixth inning.
Then, Siena scored three runs in the ninth inning to close out the scoring. Billy Lazio scored the game-winning run on Eric Hildenbrand's bases loaded single to right field.
With the split of the doubleheader, Charlotte's record goes to 1-2. While, Siena's record stands at 1-1.
The two teams conclude their series Sunday, February 22 at 12 pm.
