Florida Atlantic struck for three runs in the third inning and single runs in the sixth and eighth to hold off a game Siena (0-4) team in Boca Raton Friday evening. The Siena pitching staff limited the nationally ranked Owls to just seven hits and three earned runs.
Rob Horst singled in two runs in FAU's breakout third inning, capping off the three run frame off Siena starter Jeremy Cabot. The three runs were the only runs Cabot's allowed in his four innings of work.
Derek Hutton scored FAU's fourth run on a steal of home in the sixth inning. The unearned run was the only allowed by senior Dale Szachewicz in his three innings of relief.
Shawn Hampton led off the seventh with a single for the Saints and promptly advanced to second on a passed ball. He came around to score Siena's initial run on the game's next play--an infield single by Matt Mueller followed by a FAU error.
Hutton singled in an insurance run for the Owls in the bottom half of the frame against Siena's Josh Courage to account for the final margin.
Chris Saxton struckout the side in the ninth inning for Florida Atlantic.
The two teams will play a doubleheader beginning at noon tomorrow. The second game is in leiu of the previously scheduled finale on Sunday afternoon. Forecasts of inclement weather in the area forced the decision to move up the final game.
