Juniors Shannon Bauer (cross country) and Sonja Vasovic (volleyball) have been selected as the Leo Dufort Siena College Student Athletes of the Month for November. Bauer and Vasovic are being recognized for their tremendous success academically and athletically.
Bauer (Warwick, NY) made a name for herself this past cross country season after posting the fastest MAAC Championship time in program history. She finished ninth overall at the MAAC Championships, landing a spot on the MAAC All-Tournament team for the second year in a row. Bauer’s ninth place finish was the highest for a Siena woman since 2007. She also became the first Siena woman to break 22 minutes in a 6K (21:39.18), topping her own school record by 31 seconds. Bauer not only finds great success athletically, but she boasts a 3.27 GPA as a part of Siena’s prestigious accounting program. Bauer was named to the MAAC All-Academic Team this past season.
"Shannon's fall cross country season has set a new standard for our program,” cross country/track coach John Kenworthy said. “Every year she climbs higher and higher up the results, and I'm happy to see all of her hard work is being recognized."
Vasovic (Zemun, Serbia) served as captain for Siena’s volleyball team which finished third in the MAAC and advanced to the MAAC Championships for the 12th time in 13 seasons. She appeared in 28 of 29 matches this year, finishing third on the team with 2.40 kills per set on the right side. Vasovic posted a .180 attack percentage and contributed 60 blocks to the front row. She was named AVSR Global national Player of the Week (10/26) after helping the Saints reach the top of the MAAC standings for most of the fall. She played a key role on the Saints’ 2014 MAAC Championship team, posting 15 kills in the Championship match win over Marist to earn a spot on the All-Tournament team. Vasovic’s success carries on to the classroom, where she boasts a 3.25 with an economics major. Vasovoc was named to the MAAC All-Academic Team this fall.
The Leo Dufort Student Athlete of the Month Award is presented nine times annually (September-May) throughout the academic year. The award recognizes exemplary achievements in both academics and athletics. The late Leo Dufort received a B.S. in marketing and management from Siena in August of 1977. His entire academic career was completed on a part-time basis beginning in the spring of 1961, as a married adult while at the same time raising five children. He passed away suddenly of a heart attack while cross country skiing in February of 1993. His wife Jeanine wanted to do something to immortalize his memory. The original plaque was donated to athletics and the department began the Leo Dufort Student Athlete of the Month Award to help carry out his legacy. Dufort graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1954, was a Navy Veteran (USS Bennington) who worked for JL Hammett Co. at the time of his death.
