LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Siena Women’s Cross Country’s Sarah Forman and Volleyball senior middle blocker Samantha Pethokoukis have been named Siena College’s Leo Dufort Student Athletes of the Month for November. The two are being honored for their success in the classroom and in their respective sports.
A Altamont, New York native, Forman earned her second-straight All-Conference honor as she finished in fourth place at the MAAC Championship. This was the highest finish of any Siena runner in the MAAC Championship. Her personal best 6K time of 21:47.34 stand as the second fastest time in program history at the MAAC Championship. At the ECAC Championship, she led the way for the women in the 5K and took ninth overall with a time of 18:11.7, which stands as the fastest Siena 5K time at Van Cortlandt Park. Forman also had the highest finish of any Siena women at the NCAA Regionals when she came in 67th place with a 23:04.8 6K time.
Forman boasts a 3.9 GPA in Psychology. She is a member of the Student Athlete Mentor (SAM) program and serves as a peer to peer resource to student athletes. She is also a member of Siena’s 4.0 Club. Forman has completed eight community service events this year. Including raising over $1,200 for the American Cancer Society with the women’s cross country team.
A Chicago, Illinois native, Pethokoukis led the Saints with a .285 attack percentage and recorded 169 kills to 1.78 kills per set. The middle blocker also led the team with 70 total blocks including five solo. She tallied 2.38 points per set during the season. Pethokoukis recorded 640 kills in her 104 matches played over her four-year campaign and tallied 322 blocks, including 31 solo blocks.
Pethokoukis holds a 3.53 GPA in Economics. She has been named to the MAAC All-Academic team each year of eligibility. She is a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) where she helps give student athletes an opportunity to generate a voice within Siena Athletics. Pethokoukis has helped Siena during its annual Festa Vino event.
The Leo Dufort Student Athlete of the Month Award is presented nine times annually (September-May) throughout the academic year. The award recognizes exemplary achievements in both academics and athletics. The late Leo Dufort received a B.S. in marketing and management from Siena in August of 1977. His entire academic career was completed on a part-time basis beginning in the spring of 1961, as a married adult while at the same time raising five children. He passed away suddenly of a heart attack while cross country skiing in February of 1993. His wife Jeanine wanted to do something to immortalize his memory. The original plaque was donated to athletics and the department began the Leo Dufort Student Athlete of the Month Award to help carry out his legacy. Dufort graduated from Catholic Central High School in 1954, was a Navy Veteran (USS Bennington) who worked for JL Hammett Co. at the time of his death.
