Siena Men's Cross Country ran 17th and the women finished 19th at the Br. John "Paddy" Doyle Meet of Champions Saturday morning at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. Siena's top finishers were sophomores - Nick Miller for the men and Christie MacFarlane for the women.
"We knew this would be an early season challenge in terms of the level of competition we were up against," said head coach John Kenworthy. "But I thought we ran well and had some great individual performances and it was good to get some experience on the MAAC Championship course."
The men finished ahead of MAAC rival Manhattan and just behind Marist (13th) and Quinnipiac (16th) in a loaded 20-team, 210-runner field. Host Iona captured the 8K race.
Miller ran 68th overall with a time of 27:09. Sal Wright (27:41) and Nick Grudev (27:44) rounded out the Saints' top three finishers.
On the women's side, MacFarlane finished as the Saints' top runner for a seventh time in eight collegiate races. MacFarlane ran 54th overall in the 190-runner field with a time of 24:15 on the 6K course. Freshman Kelly Pasko (26:20) was second amongst Siena finishers.
The Saints return to the course in two weeks for Lehigh's Paul Short Invitational Oct. 5 at 10 a.m. in Bethlehem, Pa.
