Siena Men's and Women's Track teams are seventh and sixth, respectively following the first day of competition at the MAAC Track & Field Indoor Championships. Two Saints qualify for finals and one relay gets silver in the first day.
"I'm really pleased with our first day of the championship," said head coach John Kenworthy. "We saw great performances through the mile and 800m heats as well as the 5K final. It was nice to have scorers in both the men's and women's 5K final. The DMRs ran exceptionally well and were certainly a highlight for the team. It was nice high note to end the day on."
Evans Kibet and Luciano Fiore won their respective heats to qualify for the 800m finals on Sunday. Kibet and Fiore are seeded two and three in the finals with their respective times of 1:54.25 and 1:54.80.
In the final event of the night, the women's DMR team of Regina Rosati, Holly Bednarek, Jaimie Polanco and Sarah Forman, originally seeded seventh, took the silver medal with a time of 12:04.81. The group also set the school record and qualified for the ECAC Championship with their run.
Starting the Saints off was the men's mile prelims. Michael Stoker just missed qualifying for the finals with his 4:31.60 time. Chris Estremera set a personal record 4:35.84 time, while Michael Carroll was close behind with his 4:35.97 finish.
Grant Norton set a personal best 2:04.16 in the 800m.
The Saints will begin the final day of the MAAC Track and Field Championship on Sunday, beginning with Kibet and Fiore in the 800m finals at 5:10 p.m.
