Although your Saints' men's basketball team came up just a couple of points short of a championship, it was an exciting end to the basketball season. After battling through a challenging non-conference schedule - the 14th hardest in the country according to the latest NCAA RPI report - the Saints rallied to finish the MAAC regular season tied for third in the final conference standings (12-8). Playing in the MAAC Championship game was our goal at the start of the season, and it's where we ended up. The women had a similar season, also finishing tied for third in the MAAC Standings (13-7), before bowing out in the conference tournament quarterfinals.
Both teams will share in the KeyBank Siena Basketball Celebration on April 12th at the Hilton Albany. We will hold our annual program enhancement reception in conjunction with the year-end celebration. Details on the event can be found here.
We recently saluted 20 student athletes who achieved a perfect 4.0 grade-point average during either or both the Spring 2016 and/or Fall 2016 semesters. These student athletes were honored at a lunch in Serra Manor hosted by Siena College President Br. F. Edward Coughlin, O.F.M., Ph. D, and Vice President for Academic Affairs Margaret Madden, Ph.D. Success in the classroom is typical for our student athletes, as last fall the department-wide grade-point average was 3.17.
Phase 1C of the ARC and MAC renovation project, which includes a new event lobby and new strength and conditioning and sports medicine suites, began Monday. Phase 1B featuring new indoor hitting cages was recently completed, and is currently being utilized by both our baseball and softball teams as they begin gearing up for conference play.
I would like to welcome Ryan Venter to our athletic department. Ryan was appointed assistant athletic director for development and will manage our Saints Alive! Athletic Fund activities.
Thank you to everyone who supports our student athletes by contributing to the Saints Alive! Athletic Fund. You can read about the various activities that Saints Alive! runs which raise the necessary funds that provide our student athletes with a college sports experience.
