Three Saints Named 2008 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Three Siena student-athletes were named 2008 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education magazine in its May 29 issue. Liga Alpe-Luka, Steve Cortes, and Jose Loren were recognized for their success in athletics, academics and in the community.

"Diverse: Issues in Higher Education established the Sports Scholars Awards to honor undergraduate students of color who have made achieving both academically and athletically a winning combination. The awards were inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe Jr.'s commitment to education as well as his love for the game."

Alpe-Luka (Liepaja, Latvia/Liepaja No 5) was named to the Sports Scholars Women's Basketball Second Team. She started all 28 games she played in and led the team with 115 assists.

Alpe-Luka graduated in May with a degree in economics. She had a cumulative GPA of 3.45 and was named Leo Dufort Student-Athlete of the Month for February. Alpe-Luka made the MAAC All-Academic Team the last three years. She was an active member in Siena Athletics' "Saints in the Community" program.

Cortes (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) was named to the Sports Scholars Men's Soccer Second Team. He played in nine games for the Saints last fall.

Cortes has a 3.22 cumulative GPA in finance and earned a place on the 2007 MAAC All-Academic Team. The sophomore is an integral part of the "Saints in the Community" initiative.

Loren (Bronx, N.Y./LaGuardia High School Of Performing Arts) was named to the Sports Scholars Men's Tennis Second Team. He had an overall record of 6-4 in doubles matches and 1-0 in singles.

Loren had a fall GPA of 3.0 and a cumulative of 3.26. He graduated in May with a degree in marketing and management. Loren was a member of the 2007 and 2008 MAAC All-Academic Teams. He also spent time volunteering with "Saints in the Community."
