Wes (Junior College basketball player) and I, Rachel (Syracuse Alum and HUGE basketball Fan) met in October of 2009. My father graduated Suma Cum Laude from Siena after going back as an adult. It was one of the proudest moments of his life. So much so that he donned his white Siena polo and green Siena baseball cap at his 2005 wake after losing his battle with lung cancer.
As if by some cosmic tragedy, we found recently that Wes' mother was also diagnosed with lung cancer. With this new struggle we are reminded how short life is, and that there is no substitute for family.
We both work six 12-14 hours days weekly just to survive, and to travel the 5 hours home to Friendship, NY to support Wes' mother every chance we possibly can. A marriage simply isn't financially possible.
The ring, as small as it may seem to some others, would literally change our lives. We would finally be able to become family. And for the symbol of our Love to be infused with the spirit of Siena - the spirit my father lived and breathed for - well that would be nothing short of a miracle for us.
